Luck is nothing more than taking advantage of opportunities that show up.
You might not be able to control when an opportunity will present itself, but you can be prepared to take advantage of them when they do appear.
Being prepared for opportunity to knock on your door requires 3 components:
This one seems the most obvious but is often overlooked in it’s importance. You must have your own clarity about what kind of opportunity you are seeking:
- Who do you want to connect with?
- What message do you want to share with this audience?
- How do you want to deliver that message?
This type of clarity makes it easy to evaluate any given opportunity to determine it if is a good fit for you and your business.
In order to take advantage of an opportunity, you should already have some structures in place. These can include, but are not limited to:
Content. On a deadline, it can be difficult to create content from scratch. However, if you already have some content created that answers the “what message you want to deliver” aspect of the clarity question, you can simply repackage it to custom tailor your message to any specific audience.
Delivery System. Many business building opportunities require you to provide some kind of product — be it as simple as a pdf document or mp3 — as a gift to the audience. Setting up the system to deliver this type of content beforehand (and learning how to use it) means you can take advantage of opportunities even on short notice.
Affiliate Program. Some opportunities — like speaking on a telesummit, for example — require you to have an affiliate program in place to track your sales that result from the people sent to you by the host business. Setting a program like this up now, before you have need of it, means you are ready to say YES to any opportunity that presents itself.
One thing that is certain about the best opportunities: they don’t come around on your schedule.
Opportunities won’t wait until “you have time,” or “this other project gets finished,” or “you are ready.” The opportunity has it’s own schedule; in fact, many opportunities appear on short notice. Are you willing to rearrange your schedule or put in extra hours in order to take advantage of them?
The opportunities that allowed me to triple my subscriber list required me to put in some extra long hours, but that extra work was worth it because it enabled me to reach more of my ideal clients. What is connecting with YOUR ideal client worth to you?
Create a “readiness” atmosphere in your business by finding clarity about the kind of opportunity you are looking for, creating structures so you are ready, even on short notice, and being willing to make the investment of time and energy in order to make opportunities happen and you will be on your way to creating your own luck, AND growing your business by leaps and bounds.
