[Editors Note: This article is a break from tradition and features an interview with a client, rather than an article written by me. I’m taking my own advice here and letting other experts share my stage and provide valuable content to my readers. Remember: you don’t have to write everything that you publish either.]
I’ve watched Lisa Barnett grow her business by leaps and bounds over the last year as we’ve worked together. I had a chance to sit down and talk with her about that recent success and the techniques she used to accomplish it.
Lisa works with the Akashic Records to help people access their own soul wisdom so they can get in touch with some of the “whys” of their life. You can think of it as karma, but a lot of it has to do with vows that we made on a soul level that play out in our life today. Akashic Records are the infinite wisdom of your soul and help you to discover what you came to do, to achieve, and to be in this life.
Q: When you first came to work with me in June of last year for a website makeover, you had about 800 subscribers on your email list. Many of my subscribers are just getting started and don’t have a list yet. Can you share where these 800 names came from?
Lisa: They were primarily clients and students who had taken my in-person workshop. I wasn’t doing much online marketing other than a Facebook page. But boy has my life changed profoundly in the last year! I’m not exactly sure how many names on on my list now — you would know — but most of my sales are now online.
Q: You have over 1800 names now. What would you attribute this success to?
Lisa: The 9-month business coaching course with Anastasia helped me to see the bigger picture, helped me to get connected to you, and showed me the value of launching via telesummits. I give a lot a credit to doing the 9-month business course and actually doing what they told me to do: rewrite my website, find you to do a WordPress-based website, and get the pieces that I didn’t have, like a real shopping cart with affiliate program. I got all of those pieces in place so that when someone contacted me and wanted me to be on a telesummit, I was ready.
The big, big trigger was when I contacted Sonia with Darius and his The New Wealth Revolution, which is one of the biggest telesummits.
Q: Can you share how that came about? Did you just send her an email cold?
Lisa: It’s a convoluted story. I contacted Cindy Kubicka about speaking on her show. She agreed to a free reading but said my list was too small. But she forwarded my name to her producer, who was Sonia. Then Sonia left Cindy but I was in her contact list and saw her note that she was working for Darius. I then contacted her about being on the telesummit. Because no one else was talking about Akashic Records, and I was all set up [with an affiliate program and shopping cart], Sonia took a chance on me.
Once you are seen on something like Darius, then people start contacting you. But then I’ve had some other opportunities show up as well. I found out Debra Poneman was a friend of a friend, but I’m didn’t ask for that introduction until I was ready. At lot of it is about timing. Don’t rush it, wait till you are feeling called and have everything in place.
I contacted her and offered her a reading. People need to experience what I do because it is hard to explain.
It took about 6 weeks for us to connect for the reading. The week we finally did it, she said one of her friends was teaching a class at Marci Shimoff’s house. Did I want to go? I got to go to Marci’s house and meet her. It took six weeks for Debra and I to connect, but if we had done the reading earlier, she probably wouldn’t have thought to invite me when her friend was teaching this course, although Marci lives about 20 minutes from me. I’ve been trying to connect with Marci for about 2 years, but it now seems that door has opened, and it’s a really big door.
Q: How do you decide who to approach for a speaking engagement?
Lisa: I looked at the bigger people and put my energy and intention there and then watched for the opportunity to show up. For example, I contacted Cindy Kubicka because she was mid-tier and I figured I might be able to get a hold of her, and she did respond but then back pedaled. Cindy lead to Sonia who lead to Darius.
I’m tending to shoot high but then accepting most of the contacts that come along, saying yes to some of the smaller summits and keeping in touch with Sonia.
My advice: The smallest telesummit might open a really big door. Stay in your heart. Be good to everybody. Love everyone. You never know where they are going to show up again.
Start with where you are comfortable. If you are just getting started, start with some of the smaller summits where you can just chat with the host and then work your way up to some of the mid-tier folks until you feel like you can handle the larger audiences. If people like you, they will introduce you around.
I remember you [Lesa] saying, “I can connect you with these telesummit hosts because I know you are set up [with a shopping cart and affiliate program].” That’s huge. Do your work. If you need a business coach, get a business coach. Re-write your website. Get your shopping cart and affiliate program set up. Those things made it possible to make that leap gracefully.
Q What should people put in their proposal when asking for speaking engagements from people they don’t know?
Lisa: I say, “I’d love to offer you an Akashic consultation.” So whatever it is that speaks to your heart that you can offer as a gift to someone so they can have an experience of what you offer and get to know you, and I would offer it for free. What we have to offer for free is our time. And when you connect with someone, it can open doors.
Q: Do you have any other advice for people just getting started and who want more opportunities grow their business?
Lisa: Listen to the good advice that you get. Find someone that you really trust. Listen and take their advice. If they fail you, find someone else. But once you find someone who gives you good advice, keep following it and trust them more.
Accessing your Akashic Records, being in tune to your higher self, or listening to your inner guidance (whatever form that takes for you) is huge and really does help your business to grow.
