One year ago, on February 24, 2011, Google released the first “Panda” update. This major update resulted in many websites losing their search traffic overnight. The infographic below summarizes this update as well as the Panda updates that have followed.
What’s the big take-away here? Every update that Google makes will likely continue to more thoroughly filter out poor or “thin” content. As a result, your long-term strategy as a website owner should be to create high-quality content.
You should also stay away from businesses, websites, and “experts” who suggest techniques designed to improve your traffic, if any employ creation or utilization of lesser-quality content. Such techniques may have a short-term benefit, but that benefit will not last. Google is serious about improving the search experience for every user and it is only a matter of time before every backhanded short-cut to increasing traffic is eliminated. Stay focused on creating quality content and you will weather any change Google dishes out.
Many thanks to the folks at SearchEngineLand.com for the beautiful infographic.
